Some inspiring indie horror

18 02 2012

I was turned onto the DEADLY INDIE DRIVE-IN blog this week via Facebook, when they contacted me and asked for some screeners to review. I decided to delve into a little research behind the avid indie/horror reviewers with, I have to (and hate to) admit, slight trepidation. When you get into things that are really, truly indie it’s touch and go, there’s no fine line between talent and utter crap, really, there’s often no line at all. Sometimes you even get both in the same film. However, the deadly indie blogspot proved to be a creaky little place filled with some inspiring films, trailers, jubilant reviews and interviews. Rough around the edges, sure, but that’s it in true indie fashion. I was excited to see a decent indie horror community going on and being represented through the blog, which looks like it’s been running for at least a couple of years now. I found myself getting duly sucked in, and I was both pleased and surprised at the level of independent talent that’s still out there, despite the crash in the DVD market and the huge losses of the brick-and-mortar sales/distribution aspect around the world. These indie genre auteurs are of the never say die variety, and a lot of the films I checked out looked a hell of a lot better than the modern/throwback crap that was going on at certain horror fests I’d attended this year. (Not even good post-modern throwback crap). I highly recommend checking the blog out, perusing the film trailers and reading the interviews with the young and unjaded genre filmmakers. It is, well, .. inspiring.

And yes, there is some decent post-modern throwback crap here, too.
